Scientifically, tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals related in their physical and chemical properties. The birthstone of October and among the most colourful of all gemstones, it is a well-known gem with some fascinating varieties, including Sophie’s personal favourite, the watermelon tourmaline, which is pink at one end and green at the other.

A term created by Sophie to describe a very fine bezel setting (a type of gemstone setting that secures a stone in place using a continuous band of metal), the ribbon setting is designed to minimise the amount of metal overlapping the top of the gem.
