TSAVORITE
One of the most valuable varieties of the garnet family, the tsavorite was only discovered in the 1960s in Africa, near the border between Kenya and Tanzania. A beautiful gemstone with a naturally vivid, clean green colour, the tsavorite is a great alternative to an emerald because it is both more durable and more affordable.

The brilliant cut is a type of diamond or gemstone cut with 58 facets, positioned to maximise a stone’s brilliance or sparkle. In the past, old brilliant cut diamonds were cut to shine brightest beneath candlelight. Invented in 1919 by diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky, the modern round brilliant cut was designed to deliver maximum sparkle beneath electric lighting. With its remarkable brilliance - more than any other diamond cut - it has long been the most popular cut for an engagement ring.

Traditionally long, thin, rectangular-shaped stones with a flat top, though they can also be square or tapered, baguette cut diamonds fall into the category of diamond cuts called step cuts. Rather than having 57 facets like a brilliant-cut diamond, baguette cut diamonds have just 14 parallel facets. Rarely used as a centre stone, they are more commonly accent stones and side stones in three-stone rings and eternity rings. gems.
For the Mine To Mount Project, Sophie travelled to Kenya to see first-hand where the Tsavorites she loves to use in her designs originate from. This 2 carat emerald cut Tsavorite was sourced directly from an artisanal mine located just outside Tsavo National Park.
All proceeds go to to Gem Legacy, a non-profit charity that promotes community development in East African artisanal gem mining communities.
