Often referred to as “the great imposter”, red spinels have long been mistaken for rubies by emperors and monarchs. Today, their popularity is on the rise, with spinel recently named an August birthstone, alongside peridot.

CARAT
A unit of weight that is used to measure the physical weight of diamonds and gemstones, one carat equals 0.200 grams or 1/5 gram and is subdivided into 100 points. The term carat is believed to derive from the carob tree, whose seeds weigh approximately 0.20 grams. To determine the approximate weight of a diamond, ancient jewellers would use carob seeds placed on balance scales. While this archaic method has been replaced with high-precision electronic weighing machines, the terminology has endured.

CADILLAC CUT DIAMONDS
A cadillac cut diamond is a shield-shaped stone with five sides. With one long base, two sides that taper at exactly the same angle and two further sides that come together to form an apex point, the cadillac cut is so called because its silhouette is reminiscent of the famous Cadillac logo. set either side of the centre stone, their angular shield shape creates a striking contrast alongside the spinel's soft curves.
