A unit of weight that is used to measure the physical weight of diamonds and gemstones, one carat equals 0.200 grams or 1/5 gram and is subdivided into 100 points. The term carat is believed to derive from the carob tree, whose seeds weigh approximately 0.20 grams. To determine the approximate weight of a diamond, ancient jewellers would use carob seeds placed on balance scales. While this archaic method has been replaced with high-precision electronic weighing machines, the terminology has endured.

The brilliant cut is a type of diamond or gemstone cut with 58 facets, positioned to maximise a stone’s brilliance or sparkle. In the past, old brilliant cut diamonds were cut to shine brightest beneath candlelight. Invented in 1919 by diamond cutter Marcel Tolkowsky, the modern round brilliant cut was designed to deliver maximum sparkle beneath electric lighting. Heat treatment is used to improve the colour or increase the clarity of gemstones. A whole range of gems are commonly heat treated, including sapphires, rubies, aquamarines, tanzanites, amethysts, citrine, blue topaz and tourmalines. Gems that haven’t been heat treated are considerably rarer and come with a much higher price tag.
