Brendan Lancaster has been painting for more than 20 years, and explored many styles and subjects over that time, showing work widely in galleries mainly in the UK, and having his work placed in collections around the world selling through online platforms.
For his recent paintings, Brendan find subjects around him in everyday life. He work out the composition in my sketchbook to simplify it down to the essentials before starting to paint. He also take inspiration from reading, most recently from Japanese fiction, especially Banana Yoshimoto and Mieko Kawakami, for the way they show that it’s the small details of our lives that can really matter.
In art, Brendan has favourite painters whose work I’ve admired for a long time, such as Gwen John, Pierre Bonnard and also pop influences, like Patrick Caulfield and Wanda Pimentel, who both have a bold flat style, and include autobiographical details, which is an inspiration to him.
These recent paintings of his are on hessian primed with gesso, backed with canvas. This gives the work an amazing tactile quality, and he think this gives the viewer a feeling that is quietly reflective and charged with energy at the same time.
